Mike,It did start out as a slur, a regional version of white trash. It somehow got cachet over the years. Don't know why.As for Blogger, you can thank Google for the weirdness. Since Google absorbed Blogger, it's easier to do some things (load photos, set up comments, and dink around with your template). The trade-off is, as you've found, commenters can't link to web sites.It is free, however ...
